Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located in the Qunji trench, Nyleke County, Xinjiang, while the reference section is situated in the Qunjisayi area of the Awulale Mt. It was named by the No. 9 Geological Survey Expedition under the Xinjiang Geological Bureau in 1982, and was cited officially by Wu Shaozu and Zhang Zhimin (1985).
Lithology and Thickness
Conglomerate and clastics. Lower part is composed mainly of brown-yellow conglomerate, intercalated with thin-bedded clayey lithic sandstone and fine-grained sandstone. Middle part is composed largely of black siltstone and marl, interbedded with brownish-yellow sandstone, and intercalated with coal seams. Upper part is composed of brownish-red and brownish-yellow conglomerates, intercalated with variegated siltstone and medium- and coarse-grained clayey quartz-sandstones. Its total thickness is 1535 m.

Regional extent
Bakalehe Fm is distributed in the Yili and Tekes basins. A layer of conglomerate with a thickness of about 1000 m occurs also in the area of the Kashi River Bridge at the westernmost end of the Awulale Mt.

Bivalves are represented by Palaeomutella cf. subparallela and P. cf. opinata.
